If you had a bone grafting procedure performed, the general postoperative instructions still apply, but several additional points should be emphasized.
Your bone graft is made up of many particles. You are likely to find some of these small granules in your mouth during the healing process. Do not be alarmed. It is normal to have some of them come out before the wound closes. The additional instructions below will help to minimize the number of particles that become dislodged.
If you have a temporary/removable prosthesis, it is important that it not impact or rest directly on the surgical area. Any pressure can cause complications including implant failure. Please notify the office if this is a concern. Also, remember that the purpose of most provisional or temporary prosthetics is for aesthetics only and should not be used for chewing.
DO NOT vigorously rinse or spit for 1 week.
DO NOT apply significant pressure with your tongue or fingers to the surgical area because the material is movable during the initial healing period.
DO NOT open your mouth widely or lift/pull up on your lip causing stretching at the surgical site. This may actually create damage and tear stitches.
Do NOT smoke or use tobacco products until directed otherwise. This greatly impairs healing and is a high risk for graft failure.
Eat only VERY soft foods or a liquid diet for the first 2-3 weeks. Chew on the opposite side of your mouth if possible.
No heavy lifting or vigorous activity for 1 week.
For the first day, it is advised to let the blood clot stabilize and not directly brush the surgical site. Following the first day, gentle rinsing and brushing is recommended. However, be careful to avoid disturbing the site.
Begin brushing and flossing the non-surgical areas as normal on the day following your surgery. Avoid directly disturbing the surgical sites for the first week and following your initial follow-up visit in the office. Progress to gentle brushing using only an extra soft brush (Butler or baby/newborn) for the next 2 weeks. Rinse gently three times a day with warm water.
